Lessons from God (and Mr Miage)

From Reson8.org via Google Reader:

image

1 These are the nations the LORD left to test all those Israelites who had not experienced any of the wars in Canaan 2 (he did this only to teach warfare to the descendants of the Israelites who had not had previous battle experience) - Judges 3

God had left some trouble for Israel. Why? So that they would toughen up. So that they would gain some skills. They had no experience and needed some. They would fight in the future. They needed to be ready. As it were, they were inexperienced.

Maybe there are things in life that come our way just to teach us a lesson. Mr. Miage had Daniel(son) wash the car, paint the fence, and sand the deck. All preparation for a battle. At the time it seemed crazy. Unfair. Like nonsense. Training often seems like that. However, at go time, the opponent took a kick to the head and Daniel was champion. He learned how to fight in previous (and seemingly stupid) experiences.

Maybe some of the tough things that God is sending your way is neither punishment nor just the way life is. Maybe it is preparation for a future time. Do not waste the experience. Learn from it. The skills that you are developing now may be critical later.

Remember the Time Line

RedState.com

Dear Reader,

This whole story about Reverend Wright further demonstrates the fraud that is Barack Obama. Let's work the timeline on this:

Barack claims that he would have left the church in 2007 if Wright had not stepped down as an "active" pastor. (Note that he is still "senior" pastor and all sermons in the churrch bulletin are still copyright to Wright)

Of course in 2006, Barack gave his largest donation to the church ever, $22,500. That's 22,500 demonstrations of his support for the message and work of Rev. Wright when Barack would have us believe that he was struggling with Wright's words and leadership.

Of course, recall that when the Wright story broke Barack hadn't heard about these sermons. They didn't happen when he was there.

Let me offer another theory: we are watching a politician lie. Politicially, it is a convenient lie, because he is lying about his state of mind, something that it is very hard to disprove or corroborate.

This is the same kind of lie that Barack Obama told about his position on Israel. He used to support a radical liberal position on Israel, like the position taught by Rev. Wright. But then, in 2003 he pivots and suddenly becomes a fan of Israel. Why? When politicians change their position a year before an election, the most obvious theory is usually the correct one. They are, or were, lying.

On Israel and on Wright, Obama's stories don't work. And that is not the sort of change we can believe in.

All the best,

Reagan Shot 17 Years Ago Today

This was supposed to go up yesterday, but I forgot to post it...
It was seventeen years ago today that the bullet of would-be assassin John Hinckley, Jr., struck the 40th President of the United States, Ronald Reagan. The Gipper's reaction? From The Reagan Diaries:
My day to address the Bldg. & Const. Trades Nat. Conf. A.F.L.-C.I.O. at the Hilton Ballroom--2 P.M. Was all dressed to go & for some reason at the last min. took off my really good wrist watch & wore an older one.

Speech not riotously received--still it was successful.

Left the hotel at the usual side entrance and headed for the car--suddenly there was a burst of gun fire from the left. S.S. Agent pushed me onto the floor of the car & jumped on top. I felt a blow in my upper back that was unbelievably painful. I was sure he'd broken my rib. The car took off. I sat up on the edge of the seat almost paralyzed by pain. Then I began coughing up blood which made both of us think--yes I had a broken rib & it had punctured a lung. He switched orders from W.H. to Geo. Wash. U. Hosp.

By the time we arrived I was having great trouble getting enough air. We did not know that Tim McCarthy (S.S.) had been shot in the chest, Jim Brady in the head & a policeman Tom Delahanty in the neck.

I walked into the emergency room and was hoisted onto a cart where I was stripped of my clothes. It was then we learned I'd been shot & had a bullet in my lung.

Getting shot hurts. Still my fear was growing because no matter how hard I tried to breathe it seemed I was getting less & less air. I focused on that tiled ceiling and prayed. But I realized I couldn't ask for Gods help while at the same time I felt hatred for the mixed up young man who had shot me. Isn't that the meaning of the lost sheep? We are all Gods children & therefore equally beloved by him. I began to pray for his soul and that he would find his way back to the fold.

I opened my eyes once to find Nancy there. I pray I'll never face a day when she isn't there. Of all the ways God has blessed me giving her to me is the greatest and beyond anything I can ever hope to deserve.

All the kids arrived and the hours ran together in a blur during which I was operated on. I know it's going to be a long recovery but there has been such an outpouring of love from all over.

The days of therapy, transfusion, intravenous etc. have gone by--now it is Sat. April 11 and this morning I left the hospital and am here at the W.H. with Nancy & Patti. The treatment, the warmth, the skill of those at G.W. has been magnificent but it's great to be here at home.

Whatever happens now I owe my life to God and will try to serve him in every way I can.
Amazing, isn't it, that in the midst of suffering and recovering from a gunshot wound and a bullet lodged in his lung, the most powerful man on Earth was thinking more about three other people than himself: the poor soul that shot him, the most powerful man in the world (God), and his wife. What an incredible display of his ability to keep it all in perspective in the face of adversity!

Windows Vista Service Pack 1

Windows Vista Service Pack 1 is available now. This can be quite a large download if you haven't kept your system up to date, of if you have a newly purchased install of Windows Vista.

My system is updated weekly, and I had a 66 megabyte download to install. It took quite some time during the overnight to download and install the update.

If you've been using Windows for any period of time -- and most of you probably have -- then you should be fully aware of the security reasons to get this update applied as soon as possible. Failure to do so could make you susceptible to all sorts of intrusion and security vulnerabilities.

R.I.P. Jericho

Jericho is now in the history books. The last episode of the second season -- doomed by CBS to be the last season -- has aired.

It is reported that they recorded two season finale episodes -- one if the show was renewed, and one if it was canceled. The second was intended to provide some sort of closure for Jericho fans. (I'd really love to see that other version, anyway.)

Well, their definition of "closure" must be "a beginning." As Jericho season two ended this evening, it ended with what was clearly the beginning of a new civil war in America. There are so many places they could go from here.

It was, in my opinion, the best episode of the second season. If I were being completely honest, I would admit that I was disappointed with the first few episodes of this second season. My wife got me hooked on the show online after it had been canceled at the end of the first season. I played catch up and watched almost every episode of the first season -- something like 24 of them -- online before it was announced that the show would be back for a second season.

That second season, signed for only seven episodes, was disappointing in many ways. First, only seven episodes? That's not a season, that's a mini-series. And the time slot they put it in? 10:00 PM on Tuesday night, a time slot that is historically bad for shows on CBS. Looking at what it was up against, I can't understand why it's a bad time slot. Jericho versus Primetime, Frontline, Baywatch, and three local programming options? Give me a break!

Anyway, the show has come to what is probably a final demise -- the beginning of a civil war. I must say, this last episode was done quite well. The story flowed quickly, yet smoothly, and wrapped up several story lines. In the end we learn that Robert Hawkins is indeed a good guy, as well as Major Beck. We learn that Texas isn't such a bad place, after all (I'm still not convinced on that one, I lived there long enough to know better).

If you missed the show, I'm sure you can catch it online soon, or on iTunes. After all, based on the ratings this second season, that's how most people watched it anyway. And, as we all know, as great as this Internet content is, it doesn't pay the bills for the networks.

Next time, I urge you, support your show by tuning in to it on television. All the letter writing campaigns and all the NUTS in the world don't pay the bills. For now, Jericho has joined the great Quantum Leap in that dreaded TV graveyard.

Goodbye, Jericho, Kansas. May you rest in peace.

Jericho Finale Coming Up

In just forty-five minutes, the final episode of Jericho will begin. Very disappointing that the show has been canceled.

I'll be tuning in, will you?

Jericho Canceled - Last Episode 3/25

From the Washington Post (which, if you don't subscribe to, you won't be able to read there after today, so I won't do them the favor of a link, but rather a cut and paste of the story):
Jericho Canceled

Well, at least they had a dream, and it came true for a season: CBS (NYSE: CBS) has canceled the post-apocalyptic drama "Jericho", the second time this has happened in two years. The first time it got canceled due to low TV ratings, the passionate fans led a protest online and forced CBS to bring it back. It has been a popular show on CBS.com and iTunes.

But on TV, the second season's Nielsen ratings were even lower than the first...the March 25th will be the last show.

According to CBS: "Without question, there are passionate viewers watching this program; we simply wish there were more...We have no regrets bringing the show back for a second try." According to THR, this does not mean the show couldn't come back on cable, but the high cost of the production, however, will likely prevent a continuation of the show.
Sure, they brought it back for a second season, but my question is this: did they really give it the best chances of survival by putting it in a 10pm time slot?

The final episode of Jericho will air Tuesday, March 25, 2008, at 10pm Eastern Time on CBS.

You know, this reminds me of the last time that a show I really enjoyed got canceled. There haven't been many shows I've enjoyed as much as Jericho. It's a shame that the real entertainment gets canceled and the garbage lives on.

Good Friday

Today is Good Friday. I have shamelessly stolen the following from HoosierAccess (link within the post).

via HoosierAccess by Josh Gillespie on 3/21/08

the-cross.jpgWhen they came to the place called the Skull, there they crucified him, along with the criminals—one on his right, the other on his left. Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing." And they divided up his clothes by casting lots.

The people stood watching, and the rulers even sneered at him. They said, "He saved others; let him save himself if he is the Christ of God, the Chosen One."

The soldiers also came up and mocked him. They offered him wine vinegar and said, "If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself."

There was a written notice above him, which read:THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.

One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: "Aren't you the Christ? Save yourself and us!"

But the other criminal rebuked him. "Don't you fear God," he said, "since you are under the same sentence? We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong."

Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom."

Jesus answered him, "I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise."

It was now about the sixth hour, and darkness came over the whole land until the ninth hour, for the sun stopped shining. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two. Jesus called out with a loud voice, "Father, into your hands I commit my spirit." When he had said this, he breathed his last. The centurion, seeing what had happened, praised God and said, "Surely this was a righteous man."

(Luke 23: 33-47 - NASB)

Movie Review: Horton Hears A Who

I took my son this afternoon to see the latest big screen adaptation from my childhood: Dr. Seuss' Horton Hears A Who.

The movie is enjoyable for all ages. My son, who sometimes finds it very difficult to sit still for any measureable amount of time, did so quite well through most of the movie. At just 88 minutes long, that's not bad, though trimming the ten minutes of previews at the start of the show might have been a big help.

If you haven't read the Dr. Seuss classic, Horton Hears A Who, shame on you. Where have you been, under a rock? The story itself shouldn't require much introduction. If it does, maybe you should buy a copy and get familiar with the story before seeing the movie.

What's most important here is how the story is treated in movie form. I have to be honest, when I saw that Jim Carrey was involved, I was a little concerned. The Grinch and The Cat In The Hat were both degraded from the great Seuss tradition when adapted to film. Luckily, Horton received an animated adaptation, which makes it a much more family-friendly treatment. Jim Carrey accomplished the rare feat of reigning in his over-the-top antics in Horton. In fact, I can't think of any areas of the movie where even adult-oriented innuendo was used.

My son did have a little tough time following the story at some points. He seemed a bit confused about the concept of Whoville existing on a speck of dust perched atop a clover. And especially when Whoville suffered the side effects of Horton jumping, bouncing, and running with the clover clutched in his trunk. Other than that, however, he quite enjoyed the movie.

The film adaptation remains as true as can be expected to the Seuss tale. Even some of the original Seuss rhyme is used in the movie.

My son said he loved the movie, though I wasn't sure at times if he was enjoying it as much as I was. Overall, it's a good movie for kids of all ages -- a great show to take the family to see. We'll probably be watching it with the whole family when it comes out on pay-per-view.

Jericho: Only Two Episodes Left?

With only two episodes left in the second season of Jericho, the action is really starting to heat up.

It is unknown as of yet whether the show will be renewed for a third season. It was originally canceled after the first season, and brought back only because of the NUTS campaign launched by the disappointed fans.

I, for one, would love to see the show continue. The story is getting better and better with every episode, and I hope to see CBS renew for a third season.

You can have your say and voice your opinion to CBS. Let them know that you want to see another season of Jericho. Send your letter today:

Woman Lived On Toilet for Years

Can you imagine this?

From the Indianapolis Star:

Boyfriend: Woman lived in bathroom

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) -- A 35-year-old woman who sat on her boyfriend's toilet for so long that her body was stuck to the seat by the time he called police had a phobia about leaving the bathroom, the boyfriend said.

"She is an adult; she made her own decision," said her boyfriend, Kory McFarren. "I should have gotten help for her sooner; I admit that. But after a while, you kind of get used to it."

The case drew nationwide attention after Ness County Sheriff Bryan Whipple said it appeared the Ness City woman's skin had grown around the seat in the two years she apparently was in the bathroom.

"We pried the toilet seat off with a pry bar and the seat went with her to the hospital," Whipple said. "The hospital removed it."

McFarren, 36, said he can't be certain how long Pam Babcock stayed in the bathroom because "time just went by so quick I can't pinpoint how long." He said beatings she received in her childhood caused her phobia.

"It just kind of happened one day; she went in and had been in there a little while, the next time it was a little longer. Then she got it in her head she was going to stay - like it was a safe place for her," McFarren said.

But McFarren said she moved around in the bathroom during that time, bathed and changed into the clothes he brought her. He brought food and water to her. They had conversations and had an otherwise normal relationship - except it all happened in the bathroom.

McFarren said he finally called police Feb. 27 after he became worried because Babcock was acting groggy - like she didn't know what was going on, except she was awake.

What emergency responders found when they went into bathroom has left residents of this small western Kansas town buzzing, and law enforcement officials incredulous.

Police found the clothed woman sitting on the toilet, her sweat pants down to mid-thigh. She was "somewhat disoriented," and her legs looked like they had atrophied, Whipple said.

"She was not glued. She was not tied. She was just physically stuck by her body," Whipple said. "It is hard to imagine. ... I still have a hard time imagining it myself."

She initially refused emergency medical services, but was finally convinced by responders and her boyfriend that she needed to be checked out at a hospital.

"She said that she didn't need any help, that she was OK and did not want to leave," he said.

Whipple said the county attorney will determine whether any charges should be filed against McFarren.

McFarren, who works at an antique store, said he has been taking care of Babcock for the 16 years they have lived together. He insisted that he tried to coax her out of the bathroom every day.

"And her reply would be, `Maybe tomorrow,'" Whipple said. "According to him, she did not want to leave the bathroom."

She was reported in fair condition Wednesday at a hospital in Wichita, about 150 miles southeast of Ness City. Whipple said she has refused to cooperate with medical providers or law enforcement investigators.

Babcock has an infection in her legs that has damaged her nerves, and there is a possibility she may wind up in a wheelchair, McFarren said.

James Ellis, a neighbor, said he had known the woman since she was a child, but that he had not seen her for at least six years.

"I don't think anybody can make any sense out of it," Ellis said.

Babcock had a tough childhood after her mother died at a young age and apparently was usually kept inside the house as she grew up, he said.

"It really doesn't surprise me," Ellis said. "What surprises me is somebody wasn't called in a bit earlier."

I guess it takes all kinds to make the world go round.
