Let the People of Indiana Vote on Marriage in 2008
There is one obstacle in the way before the people of Indiana will have the privilege to vote on defining marriage as between one man and one woman and that obstacle is the Indiana House of Representatives.
State law requires that for an amendment to go to the people, it has to pass both chambers with a majority vote (which happened in 2005), then there must be an intervening election (which happened in Nov 2006), then the same amendment language has to pass both chambers again with a new legislature. The marriage amendment (SJR 7) has passed for the second time in the Senate, but it appears as if leadership in the House is going to try and amend the language which would start the amendment process all over again.
If this happens, the earliest the marriage amendment could be voted on by the people is 2010. But if the original language passes the House this year, Hoosiers will get the opportunity to vote on marriage in November 2008.
During the 2006 elections, Speaker of the House, Pat Bauer, campaigned that if he became Speaker, he would allow a vote on the marriage amendment. His party won the House and he is Speaker, so now it is his turn to uphold his campaign promise and allow the House to vote on SJR 7.
One tactic pro-family groups believe Speaker Bauer will try is to amend the language and have the House vote on that language instead of the original language, which would start the amendment process all over again.
TAKE ACTION:
Please get involved now to help get SJR 7 - the state marriage amendment - passed in the Indiana House. Call your representative and ask him or her to vote for the language that passed from the Senate in SJR 7. Respectfully ask them not to amend the language which would start the amendment process over. Ask your representative to let the people of Indiana vote on marriage in November 2008.
Click here and enter your 9-digit ZIP code into the yellow box on the right to get the name and contact information for your state representative. You must log in to the system before you will be able to send an email to your representative.
Please get involved today to let the people of Indiana decide the definition of marriage in the state.
