In his weekly radio address President Bush said, "Securing the border and upholding family values are not partisan concerns. They are important to all Americans. They must be addressed, and this bill is the best way to do it. I urge Senator Reid to act quickly to bring this bill back to the Senate floor for a vote, and I urge Senators from both parties to support it. The immigration debate has divided too many Americans. By coming together, we can build an immigration system worthy of this great Nation -- one that keeps us safe and prosperous, welcomes dreamers and doers from across the globe, and trusts in our country's genius for making us all Americans -- one Nation under God."

Coming Up Soon

No podcast episode this week. With all of the running around in interviews and trying to get my car repairs done before leaving my new company to embark on a new course with a new company (which looks to be an almost certain thing), it's been quite a hectic week.

But don't give up on me yet. I rarely miss a week of podcasting, and will get an episode up early next week. I promise to make it worth the wait.

Almost There?

As I said in an earlier post, I've been talking with a potential new employer, and things seem to be looking pretty promising. I'll be meeting with the Divisional Manager (Vice President?) on Friday. Whether that meeting will result in an immediate or future job offer, I can only speculate. Here are some of the reasons I'm looking at making this change:

• My daily commute would go from four hours round trip to 30 minutes (resulting in less money for gas and maintenance and more time with my family)
  
• My medical benefits (which I've mentioned before here, and here) will begin immediately, and be traditional rather than an $800 annual fund for a family of four;
• My current employer has reduced the hours for each store, causing us accomplish the same (and sometimes more) tasks in less time with fewer people;
• I've been directed to convert two full time employees to part time this month (one of whom has been with the company for ten years), in order to cut costs;

While all of these "cost-cutting" measures are being implemented....

• My company has given away over $150,000 in a stupid internal contest that involves answering a quiz question each day;
• My District Manager will receive a $20,000+ quarterly bonus check this month;
• My company recently spent millions of dollars to sponsor what turned out to be a very unsuccessful sporting event

All of these cuts at the store level, where the customer is served and the money is rang, have been made while even more cash is flowing out of the corporate offices for other reasons. Employees (including myself) are disgruntled and demotivated, while no one above the store level is bearing the pain.

And if that wasn't enough, I recently had my integrity called into question by one of the District Managers. I'll discuss that more once I'm no longer employed here, but if they have any reason not to trust my word about something, then they really shouldn't feel comfortable with me running a store for them. I know I don't feel comfortable with it anymore.

Moving On?

If you're a regular reader here, or a regular listener to my podcast, then you know about my daily two-hour commute (each way) to work. I've been looking for some time for something closer to home. Well, I don't want to count my chickens before they're hatched, so to speak, but I interviewed yesterday with a company that is moving into our neighborhood, and things went quite well. It seems quite promising that something might come of this, and I'll finally be working within twenty minutes of my family once again.

And it couldn't have come a moment too soon. For reasons that I won't go into just yet (I promise to share them with you if all goes well and I make this career change), I've lost both trust and respect for my current company. But more on that in a future post.

Either way, I'd appreciate your thoughts and support on this possible new venture I'm pursuing.
