Book Review: Merciless by Robin Parrish

Book ReviewIn book three of his Dominion trilogy, Merciless, author Robin Parrish wraps up an incredible saga of good versus evil.

When Noah and his family emerged from the ark after the Great Flood, God made him a promise [Genesis 8:30-22], and a sign to remember that promise by [Genesis 9:8-17]. The sign was a rainbow, and the promise was that God would never again destroy all living things, as he had done with the Great Flood.

In Merciless, we finally learn the entire premise behind the Dominion trilogy.

* * * SPOILER ALERT * * *

Imagine if a line of descendants from Cain, the first murderer, existed today in a secret society -- a society with one purpose and one goal: to pick up where God had left off; to free God of his promise made to Noah; to allow God the opportunity to start over again with the human race by taking matters into their own hands and destroying all life on Earth.

The Secretum of Six is just such a society, and they have manufactured and manipulated false prophecy to support their belief that God needs a second chance at the human race. Through the use of three-hundred special rings, including the great Seal of Dominion, the Secretum of Six has called forth the Angel of Death to unleash havoc and destruction upon the Earth. It is up to the wearers of those rings to put a stop to this secret society and restore life as we know it to our planet.

* * * END OF SPOILERS * * *

Author Robin Parrish delivers a thought-provoking tale of "what if" with his Dominion trilogy, coming on strong in book one, laying a solid foundation in book two, and closing with a bang in book three.

If you enjoy mystery, suspense, and intrigue, you cannot be disappointed with the Dominion trilogy.

Book Review: Fearless by Robin Parrish

Book ReviewRobin Parrish continues his Dominion trilogy in book two, Fearless. Grant Burrows, having newly discovered himself and his destiny in book one, Relentless, sets out to prove that he isn't what he was designed to be. His makers, and a clandestine group known as the Secretum of Six, claim that Grant is the Bringer of prophecy over 7,000 years old. Grant isn't so certain.

Finding himself newly possessed of an incredible telekinetic strength, Borrows sets out to alter his own destiny, bringing justice and protection to the down-trodden rather than fulfilling the prophecy of the Bringer. But can he rewrite destiny?

Author Parrish weaves an intriguing tale that, while not quite as captivating as the first installment of the trilogy, will hold your interest for the promise of what's to come, as the shocker ending sets the pace for the third and final installment, Merciless. You won't want to miss this one.

Book Review: Relentless by Robin Parrish

Book ReviewYou may have seen my review of Offworld by Robin Parrish, a fascinating tale of travel to the red planet Mars and the shocking discovery that awaits the interplanetary travelers upon their return home. In the 2006 volume of his Dominion trilogy, Relentless, Parrish introduces us to an incredible tale of good versus evil -- one in which we aren't always sure what is good and what is evil.

* * * MINOR SPOILER ALERT * * *

When loner Collin Boyd gets off the bus on his way to work and sees himself walking down the street, the world as he knows it changes forever. For Collin Boyd is no longer Collin Boyd, but Grant Borrows -- though Collin Boyd lives on independently. Grant has all of the memories of his former self, new talents and skills he has never been taught, and a mysterious ring on his finger that he never put on and cannot take off.

Parrish takes us on an incredible journey from what is to what might be, with the opening to his Dominion trilogy, as we follow Grant Borrows as he discovers that he is not the only person who has been "Shifted" from his former self into someone he doesn't know. As he sets out on a mission to find himself -- or why he is no longer himself -- Borrows discovers that he is part of a plan that was set into motion when he was just a toddler -- possibly even prophesied thousands of years ago. And he quickly learns that some people very close to him may have played a major role in his "Shift."

* * * END OF SPOILERS * * *

But who is Grant Borrows, really? And why has Collin Boyd been thrust into his life? Is he good or evil? A hero, or a villain? Parrish reveals just enough in Relentless (Dominion Trilogy #1) to leave the reader wanting for more, which is why I'm headed out this afternoon to continue the adventure with Fearless (Dominion Trilogy #2).

Take the trip with me. You won't be disappointed.

Book Review: Offworld by Robin Parrish

Book ReviewThanks to the folks at The Christian Manifesto, who have frequent contests featuring books by great Christian Fiction authors, I recently had the pleasure to read the latest offering from Robin Parrish, Offworld.

Offworld is one of those rare books that you can read and enjoy and never even realize you're reading Christian Fiction if you didn't already know.

* * * * SPOILER ALERT * * * *

The year is 2033 as an unlikely team of American astronauts are about to return from the first manned trip to Mars. After living two-and-a-half years on the red planet, away from friends and family, away from civilization, away from everything that they have already known, this unlikely crew of four eagerly anticipates returning home -- expecting not only a welcome from those they left behind, but also a hero's welcome as the first to walk on Mars.

But when the crew and their ship the Ares are barely two thirds of the way along their return trip, things go terribly, unpredictably wrong when the Ares loses contact with Mission Control in Houston. Upon crash landing on their home planet, they find that loss of contact with Houston is the least of their worries. What follows is a fast-paced ride aboard a rickety roller coaster with no restraint as Parrish weaves a captivating tale of suspense, intrigue, mystery, and even terror.

END OF SPOILERS

I must say that at times I found Offworld a bit confusing -- meaning I wasn't quite sure what the point to the story was, where it was headed, if it even had a destination. Maybe that's one of the things that kept me eagerly turning the pages late into the night, anxious to learn just what was going to happen to America's future heroes next.

Whether you're a fan of science fiction, mystery, or thrillers, Offworld will entertain and satisfy. It's a must read across many genres. And you'll never look at the space program the same way again.
